^Moving eligibility conditions apply. Transferring your AGL Virtual Solar subscription and electricity plan is only possible within NSW and cannot be moved within the 12-month recontracting period or to a property which does not meet the original eligibility criteria, such as to a home with a rooftop solar system installed. *Individual discounts are based on the performance of a physical offsite solar system and the amount of solar energy it generates. How it works

It’s simple. AGL Virtual Solar gives you access to solar generation credits to help lower your electricity bill, as if you had a solar system on your roof – the difference is you don’t need to own or install a thing. It’s a good solution if you rent, live in an apartment or your home’s roof is unsuitable for solar.

So here’s how it works.

  1. An offsite solar system generates renewable solar energy.

AGL owns and maintains the solar system, and makes sure it’s performing at its best.

  2. Switch to AGL’s Virtual Solar energy plan and receive solar generation credits on your AGL electricity bill.

These credits reflect the amount of solar energy produced by AGL’s offsite solar system, in proportion to your subscription size.

  3. And how many credits you receive, depends on your subscription size.

Choose a subscription size and price that’s right for you. You’ll receive the most AGL Virtual Solar bill credits on the 5 kW subscription.

  4. Take your AGL Virtual Solar subscription with you when you move.

AGL Virtual Solar can move with you to an eligible property within NSW, so your solar savings are never tied to your roof.

*Individual savings are based on the performance of a physical offsite solar system’s solar energy generation, and will vary and will be affected by individual factors including your subscription period, seasonality and weather conditions and events.

*Individual discounts and averages are based on a 12-month subscription period and 20 year average estimated based on the long-term average solar irradiance data from the Bureau of Meteorology in the industry standard solar simulation tool PVSyst, the estimated performance of a physical offsite solar system and the amount of solar energy it generates. Discounts and averages will vary and will be affected by individual factors including your current energy usages, current electricity plan discounts, AGL Virtual Solar subscription period, seasonality and weather conditions and events. Non-continuous subscription, or subscription over a different time period will affect your discounts. The net discounts calculations do not factor in changes to energy consumption or electricity tariffs, which are subject to change within a 12-month period. ^Generation credits are estimates only. AGL Virtual Solar generation credits appear on your AGL electricity bill as a representation of the solar energy produced by an offsite solar system. Actual generation performance will vary and is affected by seasonality and weather conditions and events.

Frequently asked questions

What is AGL Virtual Solar?

AGL Virtual Solar is a new way for eligible NSW households to enjoy access to solar savings, even if they don’t own their roof.

If you’re a renter or an apartment owner, it’s usually not possible to install a rooftop solar system to help you save.

AGL Virtual Solar is an exciting new pilot that aims to change that, giving more Australians access to some of the financial benefits of solar.

How does Virtual Solar work?

An offsite commercial-scale solar system, owned and managed by AGL, generates solar electricity.

As an AGL Virtual Solar customer, you receive solar generation credits on your bill which reflect the amount of energy produced by the offsite system, in proportion to your kW subscription amount.

Your on-bill credits reflect how much energy the physical solar system produces, which is naturally affected by weather and seasonality.

For example, AGL Virtual Solar customers will earn more generation credits on days with high UV levels, like sunny summer days, as these are the periods in which the offsite solar system generates more energy. A customer on a 5 kW subscription will receive proportionally more credits than a customer on a 3 kW subscription.

It’s important to know that you don’t use the solar energy produced by the offsite solar system as part of the AGL Virtual Solar subscription – you simply earn solar generation credits.

A subscription also doesn’t entitle you to an ownership stake in the offsite solar system. The system continues to be owned and managed by AGL, so you can enjoy access to some of the benefits of solar without the long-term commitment of owning panels.

Do I use solar energy with AGL Virtual Solar?

No. AGL Virtual Solar gives you access to solar generation credits on your bill as part of your Virtual Solar subscription and electricity plan.

AGL Virtual Solar does not provide you with access to solar energy.

The solar energy produced by the offsite system is used by the business on whose roof the solar system is installed on – in this case a commercial winery in the Barossa Valley. Any excess solar energy is fed into the electricity grid.

Where is the offsite solar system?

The solar system is in the Barossa Valley, in South Australia. This site was chosen due to its high solar irradiation levels, which is optimal for solar energy production.

Is AGL Virtual Solar an electricity plan?

When you subscribe to AGL Virtual Solar you also switch to AGL’s Virtual Solar electricity plan.

When you receive your AGL Virtual Solar electricity plan bill, you’ll pay for your usual grid electricity at the rates outlined in your plan and a subscription fee. You will also receive credits on your bill, look out for “Virtual Solar generation credits.”

Speak to an AGL energy expert to learn more about the AGL Virtual Solar electricity plan.

Can I keep my existing electricity plan?

No. When you subscribe to AGL Virtual Solar you’ll move onto AGL’s Virtual Solar electricity plan, relinquishing discounts and offers associated with your old plan, including ‘flexible billing’.

How long does the electricity plan last?

The AGL Virtual Solar electricity plan contract term is 12 months and you can leave the AGL Virtual Solar plan at any time – there’s no exit fee.

At the end of your AGL Virtual Solar contract term you will be placed on a new energy plan which may include a different set of variable rates. We will write to you before this occurs.

Is there an exit fee?

No. You can leave your AGL Virtual Solar subscription and electricity plan at any time – there’s no exit fee.

Can I decrease or increase my subscription?

You can change your subscription size by moving onto a new AGL Virtual Solar electricity plan.
You cannot currently change your subscription size while remaining on your original AGL Virtual Solar electricity plan.

Speak to our sales team to discuss changing your AGL Virtual Solar electricity plan – call 1300 856 233 (9am – 5pm AEST Mon to Fri).

What happens if I move?

You may be able to take your AGL Virtual Solar subscription and electricity plan with you if you move within NSW to an equally eligible new residence, and you’re not within your recontracting period.

Which is better, AGL Virtual Solar or rooftop solar?

AGL Virtual Solar may be the right solution for you if you’re a renter, live in an apartment or have a roof that is unsuitable for a rooftop solar system installation.

Roof size, strength, orientation and pitch, as well as shading, are important factors when determining if a rooftop solar system can be installed.

A physical rooftop installation may be a better fit if you own your own roof, and it’s suitable for a solar installation.

Call 1300 856 233 (9am – 5pm AEST Mon to Fri) to speak to an AGL expert today to see which solar solution is right for you.

Does it matter what time of the day I use my electricity?

One of the benefits of AGL Virtual Solar is that is doesn’t matter what time of day you use electricity. Your bill will reflect a solar generation credit relative to your AGL Virtual Solar subscription, irrespective of how much energy is used in your home.

What effect does seasonality have on my generation credits?

Your on-bill credits reflect how much energy a physical solar system produces, and naturally is affected by weather and seasonality.

For example, AGL Virtual Solar customers will earn more generation credits on days with high UV levels, like sunny summer days, as these are the periods in which the offsite solar system generates more energy.

Will I get a separate bill for AGL Virtual Solar?

You’ll receive a single AGL energy bill.

When you sign up to AGL Virtual Solar, you’ll also move on to a AGL Virtual Solar electricity plan. You’ll see your standard energy charges, including your daily standing charge (connection fees) and a variable energy usage charge.

In addition to your standard electricity charges, you’ll see a AGL Virtual Solar subscription fee, a generation amount in and generation credit that reflects the kW size of your subscription.

Can I get a generation credit on my gas bill?

No. AGL Virtual Solar generation credits can only be applied to your AGL electricity bills.

Who can get AGL Virtual Solar?

AGL Virtual Solar is only available to NSW residential customers who are with, or are willing to join, AGL for their electricity supply.

AGL Virtual Solar is designed for customers who can’t install a rooftop solar system, so it isn’t available to customers who have solar installed at their property.

AGL Virtual Solar is currently being offered as part of a limited pilot in NSW.

Do I need to be an AGL customer?

Yes. AGL Virtual Solar is only available to AGL electricity customers, or those who are willing to make the switch.

Is the offer limited?

Yes. The number of places available in the AGL Virtual Solar pilot is limited by the amount of solar capacity at the large-scale solar system.

Do I need to change my meter / switchboard?

No, AGL Virtual Solar is an electricity plan and no hardware or metering changes are involved.

Do I need to pay any maintenance and installation costs?

No, AGL will manage the maintenance of the offsite solar system so you don’t need to worry about any maintenance costs. AGL also owns the offsite solar system, so there are no installation costs for you.
