How solar batteries work.

Solar batteries work hand in hand with your solar panels. As your panels convert the sun’s rays into solar energy, your battery will store that energy for you to use at a later time. In a traditional setup with only panels and an inverter, your home uses the energy being produced and the excess is sent off to the grid. The battery intercepts this energy and stores it for later use, so you no longer need to be at home to experience the solar difference.

Batteries also serve a double purpose as a back up for your home. If the power goes out you can use the stored battery power to keep your crucial appliances running.

    This battery is suited to a 3-4kW solar system with a total storage of 7.2kWh. It can power a home for approximately two to six hours depending on household consumption.

  • Sunverge SIS 11.6

    This battery is suited to a 4.5kW solar system with a total storage of 11.6kWh. It can power a home for approximately three to nine hours depending on household consumption.

  • Sunverge SIS 19.4

    This battery is suited to a 5kW solar system with a total storage of 19.4kWh. It can power a home for approximately five to 15 hours depending on household consumption.

AGL’s storage experts conduct detailed research around which batteries suit well to the Australian conditions and lifestyles. The Lithium-ion batteries that AGL have selected are maintenance free, compact and long lived; as well as exceeding international battery safety standards.

How long does the battery last?

PowerLegato (medium)

This battery is designed to last for up to 5,000 cycles or a total of 10 years (whichever occurs first).

SIS 11.6 (large) and SIS 19.4 (extra large)

These batteries are designed to last for up to 7,000 cycles or a total of 10 years (whichever comes first).

What is the capacity of the battery?

PowerLegato (medium)

Total storage limit of 7.2kWh with 6.5kWh available for use. This is approximately 90% depth of discharge as 100% discharge of batteries will lead to a reduced lifespan. Discharges at a continuous rate of 3 kW. The time it will take to use the stored energy will vary based on your consumption (e.g. Over 2 hours if your demand is 3 kW, or 6 hours if your demand is 1 kW).

SIS 11.6 (large)

The SIS has a total storage limit of 11.6 kWh with 9.9 kWh available for use. This is around 80% depth of discharge with a continuous rate of 5 kW. 100% discharge of batteries will lead to a reduced lifespan. The time it will take to use the stored energy will vary based on your consumption (e.g. Over three hours if your demand is 3 kW, or nine hours if your demand is 1 kW).

SIS 19.4 (extra large)

The extra large SIS has a total storage limit of 19.4 kWh with 16.5 kWh available for use. This is around 80% depth of discharge with a continuous rate of 5 kW. 100% discharge of batteries will lead to a reduced lifespan. The time it will take to use the stored energy will vary based on your consumption (e.g. Over five hours if your demand is 3 kW, or 15 hours if your demand is 1 kW).

Can I charge my battery from the grid?

Yes. If your solar system is not producing enough energy to charge your battery, you can power it from the grid.

Where can I install a solar battery?

PowerLegato (medium)

Install indoors with adequate ventilation and in an environment up to 40°C. We recommend an enclosed garage.

SIS 11.6 (large) and SIS 19.4 (extra large)

Install the SIS batteries either indoors or outdoors in an environment up to 50°C. We recommend in the garage, or under an eave on a south or east facing wall, away from direct sunlight.

What are the dimensions of a solar battery?

PowerLegato (medium)

This battery is 67cm x 68cm x 38cm and weighs approximately 140kg.

SIS 11.6 (large) and SIS 19.4 (extra large)

These batteries are (H) 186cm (W) 86cm (D) 36cm and weigh approximately 300kg.

Will the battery power my entire home?

The current generation of solar batteries cannot completely power an average home in all circumstances, however the right battery from AGL can greatly decrease your reliance on energy from the grid. We’ll work with you to determine the best option for your home and tailor a solution that fits.

How do I know which battery will be best for me?

First, it is important to make sure that your battery is able to fully charge from the solar power you would otherwise export to the grid. AGL offers a range of sizes in order for you to pick the right battery for your home. A general rule of thumb can be:

  • If your solar export is between 6 kWh and 9 kWh on an average day you should consider our 7.2kWh battery.
  • If your solar export is between 9 kWh and 15 kWh on an average day you should consider our 11.6 kWh battery.
  • If your solar export is over 15 kWh on an average day you should consider our 19.4 kWh battery.

What is the warranty period offered on batteries from AGL?

 

AGL offers a 10 year warranty on PowerLegato and a 10 year manufacturer warranty for Sunverge.
